THE CALL FROM ARMENIA: CANADA’S RESPONSE TO THE ARMENIAN GENOCIDE
and CANADA AND THE ARMENIAN GENOCIDE

On the occasion of the centennial of the Armenian Genocide, the Armenian Genocide Centennial Committee of Canada published a book, which is based on the archival material found in Canadian historical records and publications about the Armenian Genocide and the efforts and assistance that the Canadian public and the governments devoted to assist and help the Armenians living in the Ottoman Empire.

The archival material covers a period from 1890 to about 1930, from the massacres perpetrated by the Sultan Abdul Hamid in mid 1890s, to the Adana massacres, to the Armenian Genocide of 1915 and the years in early to mid 1920s, when the Canadian government and newly established Canadian humanitarian organizations accepted to sponsor 109 Armenian orphans into Canada; they were placed in a farm in Georgetown, and they were named " The Georgetown Boys" , this in fact was one of the first humanitarian experiences for Canada.

This book is a window into newly researched pages of Canadian history and one of our first encounters with international humanitarian assistance. This book is an excellent resource for Grade 10 to 12 teachers teaching Canadian history, law, human rights and genocide. The Corning Centre is currently developing a series of online modules and lessons using the research from this book and other materials researched by the centre. These will be made available to teachers to use in their classrooms free of charge.
